C.F. Stead: an English tannery with a world reputation
C.F. Stead is one of the great names in British leather. Founded in Leeds in 1904, the tannery became known for pushing beyond traditional leathers into modern suedes, a focus that still underpins its range today. Stead itself describes Janus as, quite simply, “the finest suede available”, and it’s a claim that has earned real credibility among shoemakers and leatherworkers around the world.
And while Stead’s tannery heritage sits in Yorkshire, its leathers are deeply woven into Northampton’s craft story. Northampton has been a centre of English shoemaking and leatherwork for well over a century, and the town’s makers have long relied on the very best British tanneries for uppers, suedes, and specialist leathers. This belt brings those two traditions together: Stead’s Snuff Janus suede, shaped and finished here in Northampton by our hands.
Why Janus calf suede is considered the best suede in the world
“Suede” can mean a lot of different things. Many suedes on the market are made from split hides, the lower layers of leather, which can feel soft but lack strength and definition over time. Janus is different. It’s produced from selected calfskins with a luxurious, silky suede face and a natural, aniline full grain reverse. In other words, it’s a premium calf leather that just happens to wear suede side out.
That full grain structure is why Janus has such a clean, refined nap and why it holds its shape so well. The fibres are tighter, giving the suede more body, better resistance to scuffing, and a beautifully even surface that brushes back to life. It’s also why the colour looks so deep. “Snuff” sits in that sweet spot of warm brown with a soft, matte glow that only great suede seems to manage.
Built for real wear, yes, even in suede
A suede belt shouldn’t be a best behaviour only accessory. We’ve designed this one to be worn often. The 35mm width gives it the presence you want with denim, while still sitting neatly through most belt loops. Inside, we’ve added a nubuck lining to provide structure, help the belt keep its shape, and improve long term durability.
Because Janus is a higher grade calf suede with a tighter fibre structure, it copes with day to day knocks better than many people expect. Like all suede, it can pick up the occasional mark, but that’s usually a feature, not a flaw. A quick brush will lift the nap and even out light scuffs, and the belt will develop a subtle, natural character over time rather than looking worn out. If you’re caught in heavy rain, let it dry naturally, away from direct heat, and brush it back once dry.
Finish it your way with a choice of nickel, clean, modern, slightly dressier, or brass, warm, vintage leaning, perfect with denim and workwear.
What to wear a Snuff suede belt with
Raw or washed denim with suede shoes or boots. Snuff is especially good with mid blue denim and earthy tones. Pair with snuff, tobacco, or dark brown suede footwear for an easy, cohesive look.
Chinos with an OCBD or knitwear. Try stone, olive, or navy chinos with an Oxford shirt or merino knit. The suede texture keeps the outfit relaxed but still considered.
Tailored trousers with a sport coat. If you like mixing textures, a suede belt can look excellent with flannel or hopsack. Choose the nickel buckle for a cleaner finish.
Workwear layers. Overshirts, chore jackets, and heavy twill trousers love suede. Choose the brass buckle to lean into the heritage feel.
One tip: don’t worry about making everything match perfectly. Snuff suede works as a bridge between browns, tans, and even black in small doses. Aim for harmony, similar warmth, rather than an exact colour match, and choose your buckle to echo other metal you wear, watch case, rings, and so on.
